Basalt flour – dosage
The rates below follow the application guidance for Green Basalt published on this site’s application pages. Adjust amounts to soil and crop goals.
How much basalt flour to apply?
For field and garden use, a typical annual rate is about 1.5 t/ha. Alternatively, a larger rate can be used less often, e.g. about 6 t/ha every 4 years.
Dosage in agriculture
- Best results when worked in during post-harvest tillage / ploughing in autumn or spring.
- Also usable as a top dressing and mixed with organic fertilizers (manure, slurry, compost).
- Application on snow is possible – meltwater carries fine particles into the soil.
Dosage in the garden
Broadcast evenly, lightly incorporate or cover with compost. When planting trees/shrubs, mix into the planting hole; for established plants, apply in the root zone under the canopy.
Dosage for vegetables
Before sowing/planting or as a side dressing. As an organic-matter additive: 50–100 kg flour per 1000 kg organic mass, ideally in layers.
Dosage for trees and shrubs
Mix into soil at planting; for existing plantings apply in a ring under the canopy and lightly work in.
Dosage for lawns
Typically 1–2 kg per 10 m², 1–2 times per year (spring/autumn). Good timing: after scarifying or on moist soil. See basalt flour for lawns.
How often?
About 1.5 t/ha yearly, or ~6 t/ha every few years. Home lawns usually need 1–2 applications per year.
When to apply?
- Autumn and spring – good windows for field crops.
- On moist soil – better adherence of the dust.
- Dusting/spraying in the morning with dew (pest-deterrence orientation: 1–2 kg / 100 m²).
